The Symptoms:

* Event attendance at NASCAR, MotoGP and other series has plummeted during the recession.
* Formula One and MotoGP fans and racers alike complain that excessive use of electronics has ruined the sport by making it less competitive.
* The new Moto2 spec engine class is by far the most competitive and exciting, yet comparatively low-tech.
* Electric motorcycle racing series TTXGP has spawned more innovation halfway through its first season than quite possibly the entire ICE motorcycle industry has over the past decade.
Because they produce no exhaust gases in operation electric vehicles (EVs) are seen as the eco-friendly alternative to conventional gas-fueled cars. While zero-local emissions is clearly a big plus, other factors contributing to the overall environmental impact of EVs are often overlooked – namely the manufacture, usage and disposal of the batteries used to store the electrical energy and the sources of power used to charge them. Now, for the first time, a team of scientists from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (or EMPA) have made a detailed life cycle assessment or ecobalance of the type of lithium-ion batteries most frequently used in EVs, to see if they really are as environmentally friendly as their manufacturers would have us believe....

The EMPA team concluded that a petrol-engined car must consume between three and four liters per 100km (or about 70mpg) in order to be as environmentally friendly as the electric car studied, powered with Li-ion batteries and charged with a typical European electricity mix.

Remy and MotoCzysz to Start Production of a Revolutionary Electric Drive System- The D1g1tal Dr1ve

via press release

PENDLETON, Ind., Aug. 24 -- Remy International, Inc. announces that its subsidiary, Remy Electric Motors, LLC, has entered into an agreement with MotoCzysz LLC to bring a revolutionary, new generation electric drive system to market. The unique drive system leverages Remy's patented High Voltage Hairpin (HVH) electric motor technology and patent-pending cooling and integration technology from MotoCzysz. The resulting breakthrough is a "complete electric drive system" optimized to elicit and manage the full performance benefit of the powerful Remy motor. The new integrated D1g1tal Dr1ve is the first of its kind of a new classification of complete electric drive solutions. Its compact size, originating from motorcycle racing and winning performance, are expected to provide a remarkable efficiency advantage to automobile and other vehicle manufacturers.

MotoCzysz is an internationally recognized design and engineering firm and considered the leading innovator in the American motorcycle industry. Today, the company focuses primarily on electric drive systems and electric vehicles. "I believe electric drives are the purest and best solution to propel the majority of automobiles around the world. The D1g1tal Dr1ve was designed specifically with that vision in mind. Our partnership with Remy Electric Motors will allow us to deliver a modern, simpler, evolved replacement for the 100 year-old gas engine. Remy is a powerhouse in electric motor design and manufacturing and our first choice for a partner in this emerging sector," says Michael Czysz, Founder and CEO of MotoCzysz. Czysz concludes, "Our mutual goal is for the D1g1tal Dr1ve to deliver the highest performance, greatest efficiency and most integrated packaging solution available for companies needing electric drive solutions."

Remy, a leading global manufacturer, remanufacturer and distributor of light duty starters and alternators and Delco Remy brand heavy-duty systems, also manufactures electric motors for hybrid and electric vehicles. With over a billion miles of proven reliability, Remy motors are an industry leader. Remy CEO John Weber says, "MotoCzysz proved their ability to optimize a Remy motor with their astounding test results and win in the TT Zero electric motorcycle race on the Isle of Man this year. Integrating that same groundbreaking engineering with the patented Remy HVH motor is a win for our electric automotive and light duty commercial customers. Remy and MotoCzysz have the experience and technology to make this remarkable propulsion system the new industry standard for electric automobiles."

The new D1g1tal Dr1ve combines high performance and efficiency in the smallest, most integrated solution available. The system was originally designed to fit a motorcycle frame. When applied to automobiles, this weight and size advantage, coupled with disproportionately high performance, will leapfrog other systems and provide OEMs, integrators and converters unheard of efficiencies. In typical electric vehicles, various components from a variety of vendors are assembled and then connected together via wires. The D1g1tal Dr1ve system optimizes and matches all high-voltage components in a single housing. The highly integrated system is packaged as a "super axle" located between the two drive wheels, delivering torque with unprecedented efficiency and compactness. Additionally the D1g1tal Dr1ve's nearly wireless solution provides additional overall safety for the vehicle.

The first D1g1tal Dr1ve utilizing a liquid-cooled Remy internal permanent magnet (IPM) motor will create class-leading torque (250ft/lbs) and 100kW (135hp) of power at 93% efficiency, measured at the rotor. Future models will extend the D1g1tal Dr1ve range to include an even more powerful drive as well as a smaller, more compact option. Remy and MotoCzysz will make the game-changing D1g1tal Dr1ve unit available in the second quarter of 2011.

The gist seems to be lack of rewards for the teams, clashed dates with FIM ePower and CRP (manufacturer) under fire for using the series to promote their own business, but as CRP point out, they are not the organiser or promoter of the TTXGP and are merely a 'go between'.

Anyone anything concrete?
With the domestic motorcycle market languishing at about 10 percent of its peak, due mainly to declining interest among young people, the industry is betting that eco-friendly innovations will rejuvenate sales.

The so-called Big Four domestic motorbike manufacturers--Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki--are introducing electric motorcycles in an effort to reinvigorate the market.

Motorcycle sales overseas have been increasing due to growing demand in Asian and other emerging economies.

The SMIT Solar Ivy is a (big) leaf-sized, 4 oz, 8”X10” solar cell that is designed to cover vertical building walls. Each “leaf” produces 0.5 to 2 watts, which cost between $10-$15 per leaf, depending upon the size of the project. Thousands of these leafs can be screwed into place on a steel-mesh wall covering. The location is determined by a pre-installation analysis by SMIT’s custom software, which calculates the best mounting angle for each leaf that will gather the most light. The example given is for NYC, where the leaves would be tilted 49 degrees and rotated south in a pattern that would prevent the leaves from shading each other. SMIT says that 4,000 leaves will cover two three-story walls and generate 10 kWh per day. SMIT is taking preorders for the next year and is in talks to launch a pilot this month on the even more angularly complex geodesic surface of the Montreal Biosphere. To me, using building walls to hang photo cells makes a lot of sense - if it works as advertised. More information is available at: s-m-i-t.com

The "Electro-Moto" article on page 28 of Popular Science describes the MotoCzysz E1pc, which won the Isle of Man TT Zero race this year at an average speed of 96 mph. Built by Portland, Oregon-based designer and engineer Michael Czysz, the E1pc has 10 times the battery capacity of a Toyota Prius and 2.5 times the torque of a Ducati 1198, according to the article. Top speed at the IOM was 141 mph at only 40% throttle. The bike uses regenerative braking, an oil-cooled motor and swappable batteries. Mr. Czysz is said to be in discussions with several companies about licensing or co-developing his technology ideas and he is working on a joint-development project with the Indian auto giant Bajaj. While none of this may be new to EV enthusiasts, it is still great to see the MotoCzysz motorcycle discussed in a magazine like Popular Science. The more EV articles in the general press the better. It will take some time for the public to become accustomed to electric vehicles and every new discussion helps.

I might add that one of my motorcycle-riding neighbors yesterday asked me if I had a new electric motorcycle. I told him that I had been riding an electric motorcycle for the past year. Even though he lives just two doors up the street, he seemed surprised. He said that the only way he noticed my EV was because he saw me riding it and didn't notice any noise. That was the only thing that caught his attention. The lack of noise may be one of the most important attributes of electric vehicles for the general public in the near future.

Bad ass is being redefined.

Motorcycle designers have been pushing the envelope since Napoleon crossed the Alps. If you can’t find a motorcycle in this gallery that causes you to stop and stare, check your pulse, something is seriously wrong.

With the interest in electric and hybrids, motorcycle designers are allowed new freedom with structural components and power transfer systems and redefining bad ass. Motorcycle design may be the last frontier of truly innovative
Hardcore gearheads use the term “appliance” to put down electric cars. But those EV haters don’t realize that gas-powered racers have nothing on electric cars—loaded with low-end torque—when it comes to pure driving pleasure. Like it or not, in a world where computerized devices dominate our lives, it’s inevitable that cars will morph into high-tech mobility appliances.
