And here is a rather dry but interesting indoor flying autonomous helicopter experiment video by MIT: http://www.suasnews.com/2011/03/4851...-using-kinect/

I've been seeing more and more videos like the first one - various stunts with quad rotors, but as cool as they are, they're limited to flying in their confined space, in sight of the motion capture cameras and the computers controlling them. The second one though - that's amazing - fully autonomous, mapping out its environment, and transmitting out full 3D meshes.

The ARDrone looks both very fun, and very frustrating when I look back at how much money I spent on a quad-rotor with camera 10 years ago for overhead photos of tournament paintball field layouts only to have the FAA make remote piloted vehicles practically illegal (legal, but crazy complex approval and licensing vs. the budget of what I was doing) not long after that.

I have an ar drone too, along with three other helis - a micro coaxial, mini fixed pitch, and a 600 size 3D CP.. The drone is the most enjoyable because of the stability and it's ability to correct it's flight when you take your hands off the controls. It's got me taking a good look at the mikrocopter.de and droidwerks quads, hexes and octos.
